Go a Little Deeper

"When He [Jesus] had stopped speaking, He said to Simon, "Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch." But Simon answered and said to Him, "Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net." And when they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking. So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, "Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!" (Luke 5:4-8).

There is a Christianity in our present culture that can be rather surfacey. It's a Christianity that maybe goes to church on Sunday's but doesn't go much deeper than that. I believe that God does not call us to this, but to complete surrender and daily devotion to Jesus Christ.

In this passage from Luke, Peter had been fishing all night long and hadn't caught a thing. He must have been tired and a little discouraged, but Jesus doesn't tell him to call it quits for the day. Jesus tells him to go a little deeper.

For Peter this seemed pretty useless after all the work he had done all night, but because Jesus said to, he obeyed. The results were unbelievable. They caught so many fish that their nets were tearing, and they filled two boats so much that they began sinking! Peter was astonished, and his obedience to Jesus led him to see His greatness and it led him to worship and humility.

I believe that God calls us to go a little deeper also. We may be Christians who read our Bibles every day, go to church every Sunday, and maybe even serve at the local church as well. You may have been doing this for a while, like Peter who had been fishing all night, and maybe you're a little worn out and discouraged. Jesus says, "go a little deeper."

Go deeper! That's where the fish are. What is Jesus calling you to today? I don't know what your "deeper" looks like. It will be different for each of us, I'm sure. Pray. Lean into Jesus, and go a little deeper according to where He leads you. That's where the fish are.

Maybe for you it's setting aside your phone or social media to make more room for Jesus. Maybe it is entering into a Bible study that will challenge you and teach you. Maybe God's calling you to share the Gospel with another person.

Whatever your "deeper" is, walk in obedience to Jesus and watch what He can do.
